How to Choose an Amino Acid Supplement: Free-Form EAAs, Leucine, Timing, and Age
An amino acid supplement should answer a pharmacokinetic question — how fast and how completely do the essential amino acids reach plasma — not a marketing question about flavor or scoop size.
Free-Form vs. Intact Protein
Intact proteins (whey, casein, food proteins) must be digested into peptides and free amino acids before absorption. That process typically unfolds over hours. Free-form amino acids skip digestion: they are already individual molecules and can appear in plasma within roughly 20–30 minutes via intestinal transporters.
That speed difference changes the shape of the anabolic signal. Muscle protein synthesis (MPS) responds strongly to a rapid rise in essential amino acids — especially leucine — through mTORC1 activation. A steep rise can produce a more efficient MPS stimulus than a slower rise to a similar peak.

Structure/function framing: free-form EAAs support efficient delivery of essential amino acids for muscle protein synthesis. They do not replace total dietary protein across the day, and they are not drugs for sarcopenia or any disease.
Completeness: All Nine EAAs Matter
The nine essential amino acids cannot be synthesized in adequate amounts by humans. Incomplete formulas — including some “BCAA-only” products that supply leucine, isoleucine, and valine without the other six EAAs — provide substrates for signaling but can leave MPS substrate-limited.
When evaluating a product:
- Confirm all nine EAAs are present
- Prefer transparent milligram amounts per serving, not opaque “amino blends”

- Check leucine content per serving, not only “total amino acids”
- For older adults, the threshold is often harder to reach from mixed meals alone (anabolic resistance)

Avoid magical thinking about a 30-minute “anabolic window” that makes or breaks results. The pharmacokinetic advantage of free-form EAAs is real; panic timing is not.
Special Considerations for Older Adults
With age, the MPS response to a given protein dose often blunts — anabolic resistance. Strategies that help:
- Higher per-meal leucine / EAA doses
- Resistance training (non-negotiable for retaining the tissue you are feeding)
- Free-form EAAs when chewing, satiety, or digestive comfort limits intact protein
Amino acids support muscle protein maintenance. They do not treat frailty, osteoporosis, or sarcopenia as medical diagnoses. Coordinate with a clinician when unintentional weight loss, falls, or chronic illness are present.
